The maker of the Switchblade family of drones is pushing into the maritime domain with the new version of its Jump-20 system.
Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Military Industries "worked to sign more than 53 industrial cooperation programs worth approximately 35 billion riyals [$9.32 billion] with local and international companies, including approximately 13 billion riyals [$3.46 billion] purchase orders for local companies,” the authority's chief said.
"Foreign firms that are direct beneficiaries of lucrative Saudi government contracts will most likely be the first to relocate. [...] Firms who are invested in the Saudi market but do not have direct government dealings will likely try to bide themselves more time," one expert said.
"I think [joining] the program [GCAP] is important to Saudi Arabia," GAMI governor Ahmad Al-Ohali tells Breaking Defense.
"Whether it's a vehicle land vehicle, a futuristic UAV that is a concept, some C4I systems, C2 systems, smaller versions of UAVs, converting a manned boat to unmanned boat — we've done it, it's us. The shift is already happening," Saudi Arabian Military Industries CEO Walid Abukhaled told Breaking Defense.
"There are currently only two production lines for these products: the original production line in the US, and now an additional source of supply here in the Kingdom," Lockheed Martin's vice president and general manager of Integrated Air and Missile Defense, Jason Reynolds told Breaking Defense.

The deal reinforces the company's commitment to developing a sustainable knowledge and innovation-based economy in line with the UAE's Vision 2030, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ship Building told Breaking Defense.
Arab countries -- mainly Egypt, the UAE and KSA -- must join forces to standardize their defense needs as well as enhance their scientific research budget through a proper joint venture, says Mohamed Al-Kenany, military researcher and defense analyst at the Arab Forum for Policy Analysis in Cairo.
